FORMAZIONE ZIG-ZAG, 2009

 

 

FORMAZIONE ZIG-ZAG is constructed using precious metals from the west coast of Africa. From 1989 - 1993 Moreau lived with her family in the town of Lomé, the capital of Togo, known as the ‘little Switzerland of Africa’. The use of copper and brass reference those employed as ornamental materials in the African culture. The colours and effects result from a transformation process through the use of tourmalin acid, oil paint and lacquer. The structure has an undoubted totemic, figurative glow.

"The work is an echo of the intricate and ungraspable darkness of the African spirit. The piece is constructed as a ´standing, monolithic figure’ between two worlds, two spaces; the real space in which the viewer stands and the reflective space which unravels between object and viewer as it is looked upon.

Rhythms, colours and illusions are brought together allowing the viewer to travel between light and dark, the conscious and the unconscious, the real and the underworld”
